Portland mayor warns affordable housing system could collapse in 6 months (SR)

Portland’s public housing authority Home Forward is in the midst of a $35 million budget deficit and dealing with a major scandal after it came to light that its CEO Ivory Mathews spent $100,000 of taxpayer money on travel.

What’s more, reporting from Willamette Week found that it takes Home Forward an average of 185 days to fill an apartment and that 955 (14%) of its housing units were empty.

Firefighters Union Backs Ballot Measure to Reroute 25% of Climate Tax Revenues to Police Hires (WW)

“The Portland Fire Fighters Association endorsed a ballot initiative Tuesday that would reroute 25% of the city’s climate tax, called the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF), to fund the hiring of about 400 additional police officers.

PCEF, which imposes a 1% sales tax on large retailers in Portland to provide funding for climate-resilient infrastructure, has been tapped many times before by city officials as they’ve sought to shore up holes in the budget. In 2024, the Portland City Council rerouted some excess PCEF revenues to shore up budget deficits in bureaus with climate-adjacent projects. And Mayor Keith Wilson is currently pushing the council to use PCEF funds to help renovate Moda Center, which multiple councilors have expressed doubts about.”
