Longview paper mill disaster could be ‘deadliest industrial tragedy in modern Washington state history,’ governor says (KUOW)

“The confirmed death toll from a chemical tank rupture in Longview has now climbed to two, officials said Wednesday morning, with another nine people presumed dead.

“We’re bracing ourselves for this being the deadliest industrial tragedy in modern Washington state history,” Gov. Bob Ferguson said at a news conference Wednesday. “I want to extend my deepest condolences to those who have been directly impacted by the loss of a loved one during this extraordinarily challenging time.”

Early Tuesday morning, a 900,000-gallon chemical tank failed at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. The tank rupture released tens of thousands of gallons of the caustic chemical known as white liquor, which is used to break wood chips into pulp to make paper.

Nine people who were injured as a result of the tank rupture were initially taken to Longview’s PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center.”

The GTM bets that shouldn't have worked, and did

One grew revenue 50x after half his team quit over the strategy. One brought in 50K signups in a single day with no paid budget. One generated 100M+ views from a stunt that took 50 hours to conceive. One asked every prospect to demo the product themselves instead of demoing it for them.

None of them followed the safe playbook. They treated GTM like an experiment, moved before they had proof, and made bets most founders would never get approved.

HubSpot for Startups documented all 6 stories in the free Bold Bets Playbook. The risks they took, why it was risky, and what it returned.

Timberline cancels highly anticipated Mt. Hood gondola project (ORL)

“Timberline has chosen to evolve its long-term approach to mountain access and guest experience in a way that better supports the resort’s long-term business viability and operational flexibility,” spokesperson John Burton said in an emailed statement.

About a mile of gradual terrain separates the two areas, and two trails already exist along the route. In 2019, Timberline released a rendering that showed a gondola and a large lodge at Summit. At the time, the company said it hoped to break ground within five to 10 years. The gondola project was at the center of Timberline’s 2022 Master Development Plan.

Now Timberline appears to have pivoted away from the gondola idea completely.

The new plan is to replace the existing Summit chair lift, extending it farther up the mountain where skiers could then jump on a new second lift, Alpine, that would top out near the Stormin’ Norman lift on the east side of the Timberline ski area. While they wouldn’t create a direct path to Timberline Lodge, the new lifts would create “a more seamless and welcoming on-mountain experience,” Burton said.”
