Oregon’s largest county shed over a dozen top leaders in 2 years, and pays handsomely to replace them (ORL)
“It’s really shocking how many leaders have left Multnomah County in such a short period of time,” Meieran said.
With over 6,500 employees, Multnomah County’s government is responsible for delivering services ranging from housing assistance to health care for approximately 800,000 residents living in Oregon’s largest county.
Since the beginning of 2024, at least 15 leaders or their deputies have left Multnomah County. In two of those cases, officials coughed up a combined $160,000 for outside firms to conduct hiring searches to replace them, records and data shared by the county show.
All told, officials said the county has spent nearly $641,000 on hiring services from July 2024 to March 2026. That includes any hiring help for other positions, but roughly $405,000 went to executive searches for 10 positions, county spokesperson Denis Theriault said. Those costs could grow: officials have authorized spending up to $500,000 with one hiring consultant, under a contract first started in 2023.”
